- You should be able to find freeware or shareware software that performs
- basically the same functions as IPhone (? I don't know what IPhone does),
- and with the WWW at your fingertips, the info in the book is probably on line
- for free.
-
- Best Data is, as you suspect, a low-end product which is what is referred
- to as a "Glue-n-Go+ modem...a Rockwell chip set slapped on a board
- and sold pretty much without any customization, and missing features found
- in many other better modems.
-
- I think it is likely you will be using your 28.8 modem for a couple of years
- at least before something better/more economical comes along. You may
- do well to buy a bit better modem. Sportster is good. Supra and Cardinal
- have flash ROM, and generally seem to get pretty good reviews. And there
- are some other well know brands out there in the price range you mention.
- If you are near a Price-Costco discount store, they have had Plug-n-Play
- Supra 28.8 internals for $145 for several months (here in Oregon at least)...
- I know a slug of people who have bought them, and they are pleased.
-
- Take a look at my modem page for some general info on modems.
-
- Best wishes to you,
- Curt....
